Within the parameters of health education, Sex Education would normally arise as a component of a planned programme of work, relevant issues such as reproduction, male and female differences; natural physical changes occurring through maturity, reasons for immunisations against Rubella - given to girls in their final year at Lacewood; will all be sensitively and appropriately covered with support from the School Nurse Team who visit school on a regular basis. Annually a meeting is held for Parents to discuss with staff the lesson plans and content prior to the work covered with pupils.
As part of our developing curriculum our local community police officer and school nurse team are involved in a ‘drugs awareness programme’ with staff and children from years 5 & 6. This work includes videos, support materials and discussions to encourage a growing awareness of the differences in drugs and the positive and negative effects of use or miss-use. However parents do have the right to withdraw their children from any of the above lessons and appropriate work would be planned for those children. |
