Summer 2011

During the Summer Term our topic is Mexico and the Aztecs. We will be finding out about where Mexico is in the world as well as information about the climate, food and tourist industry. We will also be looking at the history of the Aztecs and their way of life.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Towards the end of the Summer Term we will be thinking about chocolate, including where it is grown and the people who grow it. This will include looking at the ethics behind buying fairtrade products. We will be using the novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (Roald Dahl) in Literacy as part of this topic.

Our Science topic will be Forces and Friction. We will be investigating what forces and friction are, how we can measure them and where we can find forces and friction in the world around us.

 

 

 

 

 

 

We have been working really hard on our French this term thinking about colours and parts of the body. We have learnt the song “Heads, Shoulders, Knees and Toes” in French.

Literacy

Non-fiction – recounts based on the class trip to the National Coal Mining Museum and recounts delivered in a newspaper and magazine format.

Poetry –exploring forms (haiku) 

 

Mathematics We are learning to add several small numbers, add several multiples of H/T, count on and back in H/T/U add and subtract in Th/H/T/U, also recall multiplication facts for 2,3,4,5, use time table facts to solve division problems, recognise the <and> symbols, finding pairs that total 9, 10,or 11, recognize simple fractions.

We are learning to recognise and give the properties of 2d shapes.

We are learning to interpret and represent data in a tally charts and pictograms.

We are learning to tell the time using a 24hr clock to the nearest minute using am/pm. We will also be using the clock for estimating and measurement of time.

 

Science

We are learning about the force of friction and its effect on the movement of an object.

We will also be learning about the properties of gas.

 

ICT We are using ICT to access many of the other areas of the curriculum, such as digital art, historical researching and developing scientific understanding. We will also be developing out typing skills and continuing our work on E-safety.

 

History & Geography We are learning about our local history ...coal mining. We are also studying the local environment which has been impacted by the local history. Due to this we will be studying the two as a package in a going underground topic. We will be learning what life was like as a miner and how the strikes impacted the lives of local people. We will also be looking at the impact of the industry on the local environment.

 

Art We are developing our fine art skills in a pen and ink style. We will be creating images relating to our coal mining topic.

 

Music We are exploring different sounds from instruments and working together to create a Samba performance.
Physical Education We are learning the skills and techniques involved in tag rugby and further developing our gymnastic skills.
Religious Education We are learning about the basic principles and foundations of the Islamic faith.
Personal, Social, Health Education

We are learning how we can overcome obstacles and achieve our goals, Going for Goals with Mrs Walker.

Later in the term we will be learning about our rights and responsibilities.

 

DT We are learning about winding mechanisms. We will be designing and creating our own structure with a winding mechanism.
