Entrants’ School Medical

This is carried out by a School Nurse Team on a random selection of school entrants as soon as reasonably possible after school entry, and includes vision testing.  All parents are notified of the time and place of this examination and are invited to be present.  If any minor defect or abnormality is noted at this examination, the School Medical Officers may do one of the following:

  1. See the child again in the presence of the parent after an interval of 3 months, 6 months, 1 year or 2 years, as considered necessary.

  2. Refer the child (with the parent’s permission) to the Speech Therapist, Eye Clinic, Hearing Clinic, Educational Psychologist, Child Guidance Clinic, Social Services, or, with the permission of the General Practitioner, to a Paediatrician, as considered necessary.

The School Medical Officers hold discussions with the school staff regarding any children who have any medical complaint, to ascertain progress at school.  Parents are encouraged to contact the School Nurse or School Medical Officers regarding any worries concerning the children at school.

Eye Testing

This is normally carried out on all children by the school nurse in Reception, Year 3 and Year 6, and the child is referred to the Eye Specialist if necessary, with the parents’ consent.  Colour vision is tested at Year 3 and the child’s parent informed if any defect is found.

Hearing Testing

This is done by an Audiology Technician in school at ages 5, 7 and 11 years.  Any child found to have defective hearing is, with consent, referred to a Hearing Screening Clinic at New Street Clinic, Barnsley, with the possibility of further referral to an Ear, Nose and Throat Specialist if necessary.

Disabled Children

Disabled children, who are either at special schools or ordinary schools are seen every year, either at school, at home or in a clinic. Parents are always informed of the time and place and invited to be present.  Before school leaving, parents have an opportunity to meet with the Careers Advisor, the School Medical Officer and Headteacher to discuss plans for the child after leaving school.
