Themes we are learning about this year

Literacy We will be learning about persuasive writing linking this to our topic work  by producing a holiday brochure to persuade people to visit Mexico. We will then look at traditional stories, fables myths and legends. This provides the opportunity for children to explore lots of exciting Aztec myths. In the later part of term we will look in detail at how to write instructions. Our final topic of the term is film narrative where children will create a short digital film as their final project.
Mathematics We will be developing our skills in all of the key areas of mathematics with a special focus on subtraction. The children will also be encouraged to develop their problem solving skills through participating in open-ended investigations.
Science This term we will be learning about habitats and lifecycles. This will develop the children's  knowledge of plants and animals around them and in more distant localities.
ICT ICT will be used to support children's learning in their topics work, art music and science. The children will be introduced to new software including Compose World, Excel and Revelation Natural Art and as well developing their skills in using Power Point, Word and the Internet.
Topic We will begin by looking at Mexico from a geographical perspective to develop children's map work skills and understanding of distant places. This will culminate in a fun Mexico day where all curriculum work will be  based on learning more about the country and culture. We will then explore Mexico's history by looking back at what life was like for the  Aztecs. The children will have lots of hands on experiences including dealing with evidence from the past and even recreating Aztec sports.
Music We will be studying 'Dragon Scales' and developing our understanding of how pentatonic scales are used to create many familiar songs. We will be developing our singing skills and using both instruments and ICT to create our own composition.
Physical Education In P.E we will begin the term by developing our tennis skills. We will then explore basic jive steps and look at how children can use dance to explore difficult issues raised in our work on bullying. In all areas of P.E we will be learning about importance of warming up before exercise and developing our skills at evaluating and improving our work.  The children will also be keeping active with Freddy Fit during our Thursday lessons.
Religious Education We will be learning about why some times are special. This will include looking at important Christian festivals and personal reflections about times that are special to us and how we feel . We will then be looking at faith in the community and examples of charitable organizations operating in the local area.
Personal,  Social Health Education This half term we will be focusing on changes and how we respond to both positive and unwelcome changes in our lives. In the second half term we will be exploring the complex issues surrounding bullying including the role of bystanders and witnesses.
