Lacewood’s admission number per year group is 30.

The policy of the local education authority is to admit children to Lacewood Primary School at the beginning of Autumn, Spring and Summer terms (Summer Term admissions finished in 2004) depending upon birth dates as follows:

Children whose 5th birthday falls between 1st September and 31st December, admission at the beginning of the Autumn Term (September).  Children whose 5th birthday falls between 1st January and 31st August, admission at the beginning of the Spring Term in January.

Parents who accept a school place for their child may request that admission is deferred until the term after their child's fifth birthday.

N.B.  No child may, without the prior approval of the Authority, be admitted before the beginning of the term in which he or she attains the age of 5 years.

Parents are invited into school a month or so prior to their child starting at Lacewood to be introduced to the Head teacher and other appropriate teachers and to be shown around the school.

Lacewood Nursery accepts children after their third birthday.  The Nursery accommodates a possible 33 children in the morning and a different 33 in the afternoon.  Admission under local education authority guidelines is by chronological age order only from the waiting list and no child is admitted for a period of less than one term prior to infant school admission excepting if a family has moved into the area in that term.  Children can be placed on the Nursery waiting list any time after their second birthday.

Children usually move through Lacewood Primary School changing classes every September.  Children may change class groups occasionally, but this will not affect the monitoring or delivery of any child’s work or progress as the curriculum emphasises the individual, complementing the structure of the National Curriculum.  Present criteria for any such move would include social, emotional development, aspects of behaviour, age, year group numbers, etc.

Children move to the High School of their choice - at the beginning of the school year in which they will have their 12th birthday.

BARNSLEY LEA ADMISSIONS POLICY AND PROCEDURE

Under new rules issued by the Government, parents have the right to apply for a place at any school in Barnsley or the surrounding district, regardless of their address.  To enable us to plan effectively for a child’s education it would be helpful if parents of pre-school children who would like a place at our school  register their child’s name with us as early as possible.  It is also necessary to apply for admission to the school in the Autumn term prior to the year of entry.  Application forms can be found at the back of the Authority’s Handbook, which will be distributed from school to those parents who have registered their child’s name, or copies can be collected from the Education Office.

If the number of applications for places at the school exceeds the number of places available, the following criteria are used to allocate places:

Priority of admission to school will be given:-

Firstly to children with brothers and/or sisters attending the school on the proposed date of admission and

Secondly to children living nearest to the school; the distance to be measured by a straight line between the child’s ordinary place of residence and the main entrance to the school building.

When the school is full applications may be refused, although it would be stressed that in such cases parents do have the right to appeal via the Education Committee to an Independent Appeals tribunal.  In the absence of an appeal, parents will be expected to approach another school with an admission request.

All decisions regarding the admission of children to the school rest with the Local Education Authority.
